FAQ

1. What is GS1 Lithuania?

GS1 Lithuania is the official national member organisation of GS1, the global not-for-profit body that develops the standards behind barcodes. It is the only organisation authorised to issue GS1 barcode numbers (GTINs) and company prefixes in Lithuania. GS1 Lithuania is an independent association, not a government agency, and it helps businesses identify, label and share data about their products in a way recognised worldwide.

2. Can a foreign-owned company or a non-Lithuanian citizen use GS1 Lithuania's services?

Yes, any company registered in Lithuania can join GS1 Lithuania, regardless of the nationality of its owners or managers. GS1 Lithuania is the official national member of GS1, the global not-for-profit organisation behind barcodes. If your company is registered in another country, you should normally contact the GS1 organisation in that country instead.

3. How do I get barcodes for my products?

You get barcodes by becoming a member of GS1 Lithuania. After joining, you receive a GS1 Company Prefix, which is used to create a unique 13-digit barcode number (GTIN) for each product. Every variant sold separately, such as a different size, colour or pack quantity, needs its own number.

4. What do I need to apply, and can I do it in English without visiting your office?

You need your company’s legal name, registration code, VAT code (if applicable), registered address and a contact person. The whole process, including forms, contracts and invoices, can be completed remotely. The application form is in Lithuania, so if you need any assistance, do not hesitate to contact us and we will walk you through it.

5. How much does membership cost, and how do I pay?

Membership consists of a one-time joining fee and an annual fee, which depend on how many barcode numbers your company needs as well as your revenue. We send invoices by email, and they are payable by bank transfer in euros.

6. Can I use barcodes from GS1 Lithuania if I sell my products abroad?

Yes, GS1 barcodes issued in Lithuania are valid and unique worldwide, in shops, warehouses and online marketplaces. Our barcodes start with 477, which shows that GS1 Lithuania issued the number. The prefix does not indicate where the product was made.

7. Why can't I just buy barcodes from a reseller website instead?

We strongly advise against it, because resold numbers are often already registered to another company. Major retailers and marketplaces such as Amazon check barcode ownership against the GS1 registry and may reject such products. Only barcodes obtained directly from GS1 are guaranteed to be registered in your company’s name.

8. How can I get help or contact GS1 Lithuania?

Our team provides consultations and support in English by email, by phone or in person. You can reach us at gs1@gs1lt.org or by phone. Our office is at J. Jasinskio g. 14B-102, LT-01112 Vilnius, Lithuania.
